Pizza Club Italy

Twenty styles. One table. Zero jargon.

I Why a club for pizza?

Pizza Club Italy is a reading circle of one topic: how twenty classic pizza styles are built, and why they differ. Membership is unnecessary — every chapter below is open to every reader. We keep the language plain, the claims modest and the tables free of advertising; the club part is simply the spirit of sharing a table.

The reading list is organized in three chapters: where pizza comes from, what every pie is composed of, and the twenty styles themselves — six Italian classics, seven American regions and seven favorites. A printable compendium collects the whole list at the end.

II The Twenty Styles

01

Margherita

Naples calls it the measure of a pizzaiolo: tomato, mozzarella and basil on a blistered thin crust — the flag of Italy, edible and proud.

Composition: thin dough · tomato · fresh mozzarella · basil · olive oil

02

Neapolitan

The codified ancestor of the Margherita — soft hydrated dough, ninety seconds in a wood oven, leopard-spotted char as a badge of honor.

Composition: hydrated dough · crushed tomato · fior di latte · olive oil · salt

03

Marinara

The club's vegan classic: no cheese at all, just tomato, garlic and oregano — the oldest written recipe of the family.

Composition: thin dough · tomato · garlic · oregano · olive oil

04

Classic Italian

The everyday Italian pie: a slender crust and one or two good toppings. Less is the whole philosophy.

Composition: thin crust · tomato or oil base · mozzarella · one or two toppings

05

Roman

Rome bakes thin and crisp, sells by weight and cuts with scissors — a texture study from the capital.

Composition: oiled thin crust · tomato · mozzarella · anchovies or oregano

06

Sicilian

A tall square focaccia with sauce over cheese and crumbs on top — the ancestor that emigrated and became half of America's pan styles.

Composition: tall dough · tomato · cheese · onions · breadcrumbs

07

New York Style

The foldable slice: wide, thin, slightly greasy by design, oregano and garlic powder on top. Sold by the slice, eaten standing.

Composition: high-gluten dough · tomato sauce · mozzarella · oregano

08

Chicago Deep Dish

A pie with walls: buttery crust in a tall pan, cheese on the bottom, chunky sauce on top — the fork-and-knife member of the club.

Composition: buttery tall crust · mozzarella · chunky tomato · sausage

09

Chicago Thin (Tavern)

The locals' choice: cracker crust sauced to the edges, scissored into squares. Deep dish's quiet, crispy sibling.

Composition: cracker crust · tomato sauce · mozzarella · fennel sausage

10

California Style

The market's pie — light crust, farmers-market produce, avocado and arugula after the bake. West Coast optimism in edible form.

Composition: light crust · olive oil or light sauce · fresh cheeses · seasonal produce

11

Texas Style

Smokehouse pizza: cornmeal crust, brisket off the pit, cheddar in the blend and pickled jalapeño heat. Everything big, as advertised.

Composition: cornmeal crust · BBQ sauce · smoked brisket · cheddar · jalapeños

12

Detroit Style

Steel pan rectangles with a frico skirt of caramelized brick cheese and sauce applied in red stripes after the bake.

Composition: rectangular dough · brick cheese · sauce stripes · cupped pepperoni

13

St. Louis Style

No yeast, no wedges, no ordinary cheese — Provel melts over a cracker base and scissors do the cutting. St. Louis alone.

Composition: unleavened crust · Provel · oregano sauce · square cuts

14

Pepperoni

The people's champion: cheese pie plus pepperoni cups that crisp in the oven and hold sauce in every bite.

Composition: hand-tossed dough · tomato sauce · mozzarella · pepperoni

15

Meat Lovers

Four meats and a reinforced crust — the club's heavyweight division, best approached with an appetite.

Composition: sturdy dough · tomato sauce · mozzarella · pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ham

16

BBQ Chicken

Barbecue sauce replaces tomato, gouda joins mozzarella, and raw red onion adds the crunch. A modern American classic.

Composition: crust · BBQ sauce · grilled chicken · gouda · red onion

17

Buffalo Chicken

Game day in a pie: buffalo-hot chicken, a mozzarella base and a cool stream of ranch or blue cheese.

Composition: crust · buffalo sauce · chicken · mozzarella · ranch

18

Hawaiian

Ham and pineapple — born in Canada, beloved and disputed worldwide. The club takes no sides, only slices.

Composition: crust · tomato sauce · mozzarella · ham · pineapple

19

Four Cheese

The tomato-free chapter: mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmesan and fontina on one crust, a touch of oil to finish.

Composition: crust · mozzarella · gorgonzola · parmesan · fontina

20

Veggie Garden

Peppers, mushrooms, onion, cherry tomatoes and olives over cheese — the garden section, restocked every season.

Composition: crust · tomato or pesto · mozzarella · peppers · mushrooms · olives
